On Collaboration

Recently, I worked with Darryl Lonsbrough, a photographer friend. Darryl lives in Wales but his children live in Spain and he wanted to explore photographically what this distance meant for him. He was interested in building a moving image piece out of an overwhelming collection of photographs.

As part of the collaboration, Darryl sent me fragments of audio recordings that he’d kept over the last few years; mobile phone recordings, messages and conversations. Like the photographs, these were snapshots of the children from different places and different times. I was interested in using these to build up a rhythmic soundtrack to complement the rhythm of the montage.

Darryl took the soundtrack and added further layers of audio, alternately complementing and disrupting the rhythm of the piece and editing images into a wonderful short film, So Far:
